A few years ago, I thought, ‘How cool would it be to have a laser cutter?’. When I looked at prices I rethought my idea of owning a laser cutter. The cost greatly outweighed what I thought I could do with it. Shortly after that, thanks to Google watching my shopping history I came across a video of a guy building his own laser. With absolutely no knowledge of lasers, little knowledge of electronics and motors, and no idea of what I was doing I started ordering parts from Amazon. After a lot of trial and error (and several scorch marks on my arms and hands) I had something I thought was passable. Excitedly I put a piece of wood on the laser bed and started the laser. My jaw dropped. I had actually done it, created a laser that not only worked but bested the features of some of the most expensive commercial systems. And even better, I knew that if it broke I knew exactly how to fix it.
Not long after, with nudging from my wife Karen, I began making earrings. We had ideas of starting to do craft fairs selling our wares for fun. After I had a large handful of earrings made, the pandemic hit. No more craft fairs. Hmmm. I boxed up my wares and put them on a shelf in my office and forgot about them.
Once the pandemic was easing, I found the box gathering dust, and began the journey again.
I create every earring by hand. I start on the computer using two programs, one to draw the initial design, and the other to translate that design into directions for the laser. Once the laser has cut out the design, I tediously attach the jump rings, earring hooks, and whatever other treatment the earring requires. Then place them on the backing and bag them.
I hope you like my wares. I hope you love my prices. All of our earrings are designed, cut, assembled and treated by hand. I have managed to create 2 or 3 new styles every week for a limited run. We are East Carolina pirates living in the middle of purple and gold. This is reflected in a lot of our earrings, with the classic skull and crossbones being the biggest seller here at home in Greenville NC.
